Calgary Flames shut out of Team Canada

CALGARY – None of the Calgary Flames’ Canadian team members are heading to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Representatives from the Canadian Olympic Committee and Hockey Canada announced the roster in Toronto on Tuesday, one month before the start of the games.

Team Canada executive director Steve Yzerman said it was a challenging roster to compile.

“We recognize the difficult decisions we had to make,” said Yzerman, highlighting the depth of talent his team had to choose from for the Olympic roster.

Former Flames defenceman Jay Bouwmeester, who was traded to the St. Louis Blues in 2013, was named to Team Canada for the 2014 games.

Meanwhile, Flames Defenceman Ladislav Smid will represent the Czech Republic at the 2014 Winter Olympics, while netminder Reto Berra has been named to the Swiss roster.

Flames center Jiri Hudler discovered he was left off the Czech Republic’s Olympic hockey team on Monday morning, but used the news as motivation and went on to get a goal and an assist in their game against the Colorado Avalanche that night.
