WINNIPEG – Manitoba Public Insurance says this past December was the worst in more than a decade for car accident claims.

“December has not been kind to Manitoba motorists (and) MPI,” spokesman Brian Smiley told Global News Monday.

The Crown Corporation opened 20,000 collision claims in December, making it the worst December in about 15 years.

“Bodily injury claims are also very high for the month of December, compared to other years,” Smiley said.

December 2013 was the second coldest since the 19th Century, with snow storms and icy conditions making road and highway travel treacherous. So far in January, the conditions haven’t improved and MPI remains very busy taking new claims.

It was very difficult to get in touch with the corporation’s call centre Monday. Some calls were met only with a busy signal, or an automated message advising to call back later. Smiley acknowledged the call centre is seeing higher than normal call volumes, plus Monday tends to be busier than other weekdays.
