Saskatchewan prisons will eventually hold 90 more inmates after a $20-million expansion was announced by the federal government Monday.

Edmonton MP Laurie Hawn unveiled the expansion plans at the Edmonton Institution, part of a $2-billion expansion to more than two dozen prisons across the country.

Fifty beds will be added at Riverbend Institution, a minimum security facility adjacent to Saskatchewan Penitentiary at Prince Albert, and 40 beds will be added to the Willow Cree Healing Lodge at the Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation.

Edmonton’s maximum-security prison will eventually hold 96 more inmates. Built in 1978, Edmonton Institution has a capacity of 222, although it is currently holding 284 prisoners.

Similar announcements were scheduled for three other Conservative MPs throughout the country.
