Regina’s Pasqua Hospital ER to remain open through February

Hospitals in Regina and Saskatoon are at capacity and if it continues to go this way for the next while, possible patient transfers to rural hospitals could be expected. File / Global News

REGINA – The Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) has found a way to keep the emergency department at the Pasqua Hospital open 24-hours a day until the end of February.

“We appreciate the continued support of our Emergency Department physicians in taking on additional shifts to enable us to maintain 24-hour, seven-day operations at both of the city’s Emergency Departments during the current physician shortage, so we can continue to provide safe, quality care to patients in southern Saskatchewan,” said Dr. David McCutcheon, vice president Physician and Integrated Health Services.

“We are also expecting two new physicians will be working in our Emergency Departments, one beginning in January and the other in February. The continued commitment of our current physicians, our new physicians, and the continued support of locums, will help us provide 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service while we continue to work to hire and relocate additional physicians to Regina in the coming months to reach our required physician complement.”

At the beginning of December RQHR was able to find a solution to provide ER care at both Regina hospitals until the end of 2013.

The Pasqua ER continues to see a reduction in the number of patients seeking care and would like to thank the public for seeking alternative community resources for their non urgent health care needs.

Patients who believe they are in need of emergency service should go to the Pasqua ER where they will be seen quickly, but should consider using an alternate service like the Meadow Primary Health Care Centre if possible.
