WINNIPEG – An amazing run of luck on the Prairies this year led to a record-breaking number of new millionaires in the West.
The Western Canadian Lottery Corp. says there were 53 prizes of $1 million or more totalling more than a quarter of a billion dollars.
The previous record for a single calendar year was in 1993 when 29 tickets won prizes of at least $1 million.
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba all shared in the good fortune.
Lady Luck even paid a couple of visits to the Northwest Territories.
The lotto corporation says commonly heard plans for a jackpot include sharing money with family, paying off bills and loans, buying a new vehicle and travelling.
