UPDATE: Flash freeze warning ended for Calgary

CALGARY-Calgary was hit with a sudden dose of harsh winter weather overnight.

Environment Canada warned Calgarians to prepare for strong winds and a possible flash freeze overnight. The fast-moving cold front swept through the city, quickly, leading to whiteout conditions on highways near Calgary.

Global News weather specialist Carla Bosacki said on Friday that Calgary could see about 4 cm of snow, with temperatures plummeting to -18 degrees.

Conditions were the worst on highways and roads outside the city. Highway 2 south of Bowden was shut down just after 8 p.m. on Friday, with the RCMP advising drivers to stay off the highway all together.

Crews are still working to clear Highway 1 near Cluny, Alberta.  There were reports of multiple collisions and stranded vehicles on the highway near Cluny, Alberta. Crews removed a jack-knifed semi from the area early Saturday and ploughs are working to rid the highway of snow drifts.

Max Bell Arena in Calgary was also affected by the flash freeze. They experienced a power outage which resulted in the cancellation of two feature games in the Mac’s Midget AAA Hockey Tournament.  The Calgary Bruins and Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs were unable to finish their game, as were the Alaska Junior Aces and Calgary Royals.
