Alain Caza appeared in court Thursday morning where he was charged with killing Amanda Caza, 34.

Global News has learned the accused is the father of the victim. Quebec provincial police confirmed they knew each other, but did not provide more details.

Local police from the MRC du Haut-Saint-Laurent arrived at a home on Cairns Street around 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Calls alerted authorities to a dispute between two people.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Alain Caza was arrested and he was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Quebec’s Crown prosecutors office confirmed he will remain detained until his case returns to court May 24.

The victim worked at the school as a secretary on Mondays since March when she first joined staff.

Principal Carla Shaw said the team’s thoughts are with Amanda Caza’s loved ones.

“She had already made significant contributions and was a well-respected member of our community,” Shaw wrote.

The school is also in contact with the school board to “ensure that additional staff is available to support students and staff who may need assistance during this difficult time.”
