REGINA – Phone lines and wireless networks in Saskatchewan are expected to be congested on Christmas Day.

SaskTel says close to 8 million text messages are expected to be sent on Dec. 25.

This is in addition to almost 600,000 long distance phone calls – 450,000 on traditional land lines and 150,000 on wireless networks.

Around 40 per cent of the calls will be made to locations within the province, with 54 per cent to Canadian destinations and the remainder to international locations.

SaskTel says the increase in traffic may result in some temporary network congestion and there are some measures that can be taken to minimize any inconvenience:

  • place calls outside the busy hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
  • verify phone numbers in advance
  • take time zones into consideration.
