Places to find shelter in the GTA during power outages

UPDATE @ 9:23 p.m. ET: Toronto Police have closed the warming centre located at 43 Division (4331 Lawrence Avenue East) due to a power outage. Police advise those in the area seeking shelter to proceed to the warming centre at 42 Division (242 Milner Avenue).

TORONTO – Hydro One and local utilities are saying that some people may go as long as 72 hours without power as they work around the clock to restore electricity to hundreds of thousands Ontario residents in the wake of an ice storm that swept across the province.

In order to help those affected by the outage, a number of Ontario municipalities have opened up emergency outreach centres.

Toronto

  • Agincourt Community Centre – 31 Glen Walford Rd.
  • Don Montgomery Community Centre – 2467 Eglinton Avenue East
  • Mitchell Field Community Centre – 89 Church Avenue
  • Joseph P Piccinini Community Centre – 1369 St. Clair Avenue West
  • Franklin Horner Community Centre – 432 Horner Avenue
  • 2 Civic Centre Court – Near Etobicoke Civic Centre
  • Matty Eckler Community Centre – 953 Gerrard Street East
  • McGregor Park Community Centre – 2231 Lawrence Avenue East

Toronto Hydro is also reminding people to have an emergency preparedness kit that includes:

  • Cash. In a power outage bank machines and debit/credit machines may not be operational.
  • Bottled water  enough for three litres per person, per day.
  • Canned food and a manual can opener.
  • Battery operated radio for news updates.

York Region

Vaughan

Vaughan is in the process of opening up warming centres at the following locations:

  • Dufferin Clark Community Centre, 1441 Clark Ave. W., Concord
  • Maple Community Centre, 10190 Keele St., Maple *Pet-Friendly*
  • Vellore Village Community Centre, 1 Villa Royale Ave., Woodbridge

Richmond Hill

  • Richvale Community Centre – 160 Avenue Road (Warming Centre)

Markham/Thornhill

Markham has opened a warming centre with overnight accomodations at the following location:

  • Milliken Mills Community Centre – 7600 Kennedy Road

Thornhill residents can take shuttle buses to the warming centre from the Thornhill Community Centre and Library, located at 7755 Bayview Ave.

Halton Region

Halton Region has opened their emergency warming and operations shelters to provide support for citizens affected by the ice storm.

According to a release issued by the municipality of Halton Sunday night, members of the city including Halton Regional Chair Gary Carr, Acting CAO Sheldon Wolfson, Paramedic Services Chief Greg Sage, Deputy Police Chief Andrew Fletcher, commissioners and staff will be available to provide community outreach.

The release urges citizens to travel with caution, as fallen trees and wires are still strewn across roadways in certain areas. Included in the release was a reminder that power outages are considered emergencies and should be forwarded to local utilities providers rather than law enforcement.
