Strangers give gift of generosity

WINNIPEG — After losing all their Christmas presents in a garage fire two weeks ago, a St. Vital family says they’ve received an even greater gift from their community: the gift of generosity.

“It’s beyond humbling,” said Robyn Burnett.

The mom of two, along with partner Kevin Kowal, watched their garage burn to the ground on Dec. 6.

Not only had the family’s insurance run out just two days before the fire, but the mom and stepdad had been using the garage to hide Christmas presents for their six-year-old and 10-year-old.

When Global News first interviewed them on Dec. 6, boxes containing dolls and toys cars sat in melted piles amid the rubble.

But neighbours and strangers have helped in a big way.

Lisa Webinger, who had never met the family, dropped off 20 presents on Sunday.

“It’s a sad story, kids and Christmas. I would be disappointed if my kids didn’t have anything Christmas morning,” said Webinger.

Webinger bought the gifts after putting out a call for donations from others.

Then “Santa” called and volunteered to help deliver them.

He greeted Nate and Cleo at the door with a jolly “Ho, ho, ho” and a hug.

“That’s what I want my kids to take away from this,” said Burnett. “I really want them to know that people are good and people care, and if you can help someone out then you should take that step to do what you can, because that’s what will make this world a better place.”
