RCMP in northern Alberta lifted a shelter-in-place order for residents on a First Nation Thursday morning after dealing with what officials described as a “high-risk police situation.”
In a news release sent just after 7:10 a.m., RCMP said all residents of John D’Or Prairie needed to stay inside their homes, lock their doors and follow the directions of police officers.
Police said they were on scene of a high-risk situation at a local residence in John D’Or Prairie. The incident was contained to the residence, according to police.
At around 9:30 a.m., RCMP said the shelter-in-place was lifted “and there is no danger to the public.”
One person was arrested and taken into custody, RCMP said.
On Friday, RCMP provided more details, saying they responded to a 6:15 a.m. call about a man with a firearm holding a woman against her will inside a home.
Due to the potential safety risk, RCMP asked the community to shelter.
The man was later arrested. Neither he nor the public nor RCMP officers were injured.
After the shelter-in-place order was lifted, RCMP searched the home, “where a significant number of firearms were located and seized.”
Marty D’or, 22, a resident of John D’or Prairie, was charged with hostage taking, careless use of a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm, pointing a firearm, uttering threats, assault, possession of a prohibited weapon, use of a firearm while committing an indictable offence, and knowingly possessing a prohibited weapon.
He was remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court on May 14.
John D’Or Prairie is about 130 kilometres east of High Level.
