Officials say two men in their 20s were airlifted to hospital after a serious crash in north of Whitby.
While Durham police responded to the call for the collision around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, investigators believe the crash may have occurred sometime around 11 p.m. on Monday.
In an update Tuesday afternoon, police said a vehicle went off the roadway north of Myrtle Road from Lakeridge Road in Pickering, causing injuries to the two people inside the vehicle.
Investigators said one man was trapped inside the vehicle and was later extricated. Police say he was originally transported to a local area hospital for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, but he was later airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre.
Police said the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was transported via Air Ornge to a Toronto trauma centre with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said one man is 26 years old and the other male is 25 years old.
Durham police said the passenger who was extricated from the vehicle was not able to locate his phone to call 911 until early this morning.
Investigators believe that the collision went unreported and unnoticed for numerous hours before police, fire and paramedics were contacted.
The roadway has since reopened.
