SASKATOON – A major natural gas leak in Saskatoon last week happened after a marked line was hit by an independent contractor.

SaskEnergy said the gas line was marked with paint and a flag.

Repairs to the line took about 10 hours and are estimated to have cost tens of thousands of dollars to fix.

The contractor will be on the hook for those costs.

The rupture last Thursday forced the evacuation of several apartments and a business on Preston Avenue.

No one lost service during the repairs and officials say an incident of this size is rare.

SaskEnergy is using this to remind contractors and homeowners to call them to remark lines if the markings are covered by snow or are no longer visible.
