SWAN RIVER, Man. – The discovery of almost four dozen neglected farm animals in northern Manitoba has led to charges of animal cruelty.

RCMP say they received a complaint from a concerned citizen about a farm in the Rural Municipality of Swan River and began an investigation.

Animal control officers and veterinarians ended up seizing 27 dogs, 15 horses and two donkeys.

Police say investigators found the animals unhealthy, neglected and not properly cared for.

A 68-year-old man is to appear in Swan River provincial court Jan. 5.

Margaret Romak, president of the Swan Valley Animal Protection League, says the organization has received a large number of mistreated dogs, many of them German shepherds.

"We got a call that there are a lot of animals needing fostering," she said Thursday. "These dogs are not socialized at all. They’re just terrified.

"Most of them have never had a collar or a leash on them and appear not to have had human contact very much."

Romak said other groups besides her own are helping with the horses and donkeys.
