What happens when you make a 911 call and need the operator to track down a cell phone number in an emergency situation?
You might think the procedure is no different from tracking down a home phone number but it is a little more complicated than that.
There is no central cell phone directory in the province or the country.
In emergency situations, 911 operators can phone the specific cell phone provider and obtain a private cell phone number after clearing certain security protocol, but the process is by no means instantaneous.
Staff Sergeant Troy Gross, who runs the 911 dispatch centre in Kelowna, says it may be even more difficult for an ambulance operator to get a cell phone number because they are not an enforcement agency.
A Telus spokesman says there is currently nothing in the works to create a central cell phone directory but the company would be happy to cooperate if something were to be set up.
