Toronto’s Jake Apacible named Canada’s favourite crossing guard

TORONTO – Northlea Elementary and Middle School celebrated the hard work and dedication of Toronto’s Jake Apacible who was named the winner of Canada’s Best Crossing Guard contest on Friday.

Apacible was honoured with a ceremony at the school’s gymnasium which also included the presentation of a large cake.

He is one of four winner this year and the only one in Ontario, the others being Leonard Gordon Sr. of Whitehorse, Wilf Hunt of St. John’s and George Drad of Winnipeg.

Students, teachers and parents across the country nominated their favourites from Sept. 23 to Nov. 22, 2013.

Apacible has been serving as Northlea’s crossing guard for over 10 years.

The contest was sponsored by Parachute Canada, a charitable organization dedicated to injury prevention, and FedEx Express Canada.

The winners received a crystal maple leaf award and $500, while each school was also given $500.
