WINNIPEG – More than 1,100 people took in the Salvation Army’s annual Christmas dinner Wednesday.
“I never miss a year,” said Frank Dumas.
The guests enjoyed a meal of turkey, ham and all the fixings.
“We have prepared 50 25-pound turkeys, 200 pounds of potatoes, 51 gallons of gravy and 180 pies,” said Jim Hayes, the mission’s executive director.

More than 80 volunteers lent a hand to pull off the massive meal.
“A lot of the people I work with just don’t have families, don’t have supports, don’t have a home to go to. So they don’t get an opportunity to go out and have a really nice family dinner,” said Linda Rost, a social worker who volunteered at the event.
Those who took in the dinner make up a fraction of those who use the Salvation Army’s services, including living at the facility and using its rehabilitation services.
“This is a festive event,” said Hayes. “But it’s also a means of connection into the future as far as continuing the relationships that are already in place with many of the people in our community.”
