WINNIPEG – Manitoba stores will be allowed to open for longer hours this Boxing Day.
The holiday this year falls on a Sunday – a day when most stores are only allowed to open between noon and 6 p.m.
But Labour Minister Jennifer Howard says she will table a bill to extend Sunday shopping hours for this Boxing Day only.
Howard says retailers lost a lot of sales in previous years when Dec. 26 fell on a Sunday.
She is also worried that without the change shoppers might be tempted to head to the United States, especially with the dollar almost at par.
Howard says details on the extended shopping hours will be released once her bill is tabled in the legislature.
