CALGARY- A massive weekend highway blitz by RCMP led to impaired driving charges against several dozen drivers and roadside suspensions for others.
RCMP set up 157 checkstops on major roads and highways across the province starting Saturday and continuing through Sunday morning.
The blitz was part of a Canada-wide RCMP enforcement campaign to get impaired drivers off the roads.
“Last weekend was unique in terms of the number of RCMP officers deployed at one time, but we will be out again this weekend and every weekend until we win the battle against impaired driving,” says RCMP superintendent Howard Eaten of “K” Division Traffic Services.
Officers stopped and checked almost 14,000 vehicles during the campaign.
35 drivers were charged with impaired driving with another 31 issued roadside suspensions.
Four drivers were issued roadside suspensions because of suspected drug use.
