EDMONTON – With the wind chill factored in, the temperature in Edmonton Saturday morning hovered around -40°C. But that didn’t stop hundreds of people from getting outside to run for a good cause.

The 23rd annual Santa Shuffle was held in Hawrelak Park Saturday morning. The event raises much-needed funds for the Salvation Army.

“When the weather drops like this and we’re unaccustomed to the temperature change, we are all inside our houses, warm, thinking about what we can do to help others. But there are people in need right now on the streets who are desperately needing the services of organizations like the Salvation Army,” said Leslie Stuart, National Santa Shuffle Director with the Salvation Army.

Participants took part in either a five kilometre run or one kilometre walk. And while many seasoned runners are comfortable running in the cold weather, Stuart said participants were just asked to do whatever distance they were comfortable with Saturday morning.

“There are a phenomenal amount of brave Edmontonians who have come out to celebrate the Santa Shuffle with us,” said Stuart. “We are so happy that so many people were able to brave the weather and join us.”

After the run or walk, those taking part were able to warm up with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. Save-On-Foods was also on hand serving up hot smokies.
