YARMOUTH, N.S. – An emergency measures official says a dam in southwestern Nova Scotia is at risk of bursting because of heavy rain.
More than 206 millimetres of rain has been recorded in the Yarmouth area since Friday, forcing the Municipality of Argyle to declare a local state of emergency.
Roads and bridges have been closed and people in the Raynardton area are being told to leave because a local dam could give way.
Emergency Measures spokesman Harold Richardson says a spillway let go and the flow of water can no longer be controlled.
He says anyone who chooses to stay may be stranded because all roads and bridges in the area are being closed.
In Barrington, people living along the rising Clyde River are being told to remain alert because they may have to leave their homes at any time.
