Holiday decorating should focus on the tree

The focus inside your home for the holidays, should almost always be the Christmas tree, according to Kate Seaver, owner of Kate’s Garden, a home decor shop in Unionville.

“The real trick is just to buy yourself one set of ribbon, or garland and some sort of harmonizing ornament,” she said.

Seaver says that allows you to add new elements or older ornaments with sentimental value without appearing misplaced.

“We basically give a foil, so to speak,” Seaver said. “Then you can still fit in all your sentimental stuff in between.”

If impact comes with size, then the second place goes to the mantle.  Here, it’s best to stick to the basics of decorating.

“What are my greens?“ Seaver said.  “What are my anchors, my visual anchors on either end? And what am I going to use to embellish the greens?”

According to Seaver, multi-purpose items are perfect as anchors.  The same lanterns from your summer patio would balance nicely on either end of a mantel piece.

Don’t have a mantel piece? Don’t worry.  Displays using organic elements on windowsills, end tables, or even a foot stool can create fun and festive display spaces.

The owner of Toronto’s Sweet Woodruff Flower Shop, Lisa Collins, dresses the ottoman in her living room with a serving tray covered in cedar springs, small birch logs and pine cones.

Collins says it is “ the perfect example of natural elements that have been brought in.”

She suggests to continue with cohesive colours in the kitchen.  In her kitchen Collins, layers a shelf layered with greens,  and saves a section of the countertop to place cedar boughs, along whimsical Christmas themed characters.

Where else can the decor be incorporated into the everyday?  The dining table.

Table top Consultant at the Bloor St. Headquarters of William-Ashley China says this holiday season is the time to bring out the good silver.

“I don’t know what people have them in boxes for” Fatima Pacheco  said. “You’re [going to] wash them, set them up and use them.”

A trend this year is the use of metals, so the finest silverware will only complement the modern edge to table decor,  says Pacheco

“You see that in jewelry, and it’s also reflected in table top… metal is everywhere.”

Add some plates or chargers in the main colour of your Christmas decor, then leave the table set.  Pacheco calls this a practical, and pretty way to decorate your home for the holidays.
