FOND DU LAC, Sask. – The chief of a northern Saskatchewan First Nation says a second regional air carrier that wants to start operations in the area could prove costly for the band.
Napoleon Mercredi of the Fond du Lac First Nation says plans by Pronto Airways to start service there Nov. 1 could mean lost revenue for the band, which owns and operates the air terminal with Transwest Air.
Mercredi says his community already has a solid relationship with Transwest, and Pronto will not be given access to the airport or the main road.
But Pronto says 200 people from the community have signed a petition demanding alternative air service.
Dennis Baranieski, Pronto’s general manager, says the airline will be setting up its own terminal on Crown land beside the airstrip.
Saskatchewan Highways says the province owns the airport and anyone is free to use it.
