A duplex that was under construction in south Edmonton was seriously damaged by fire early Thursday morning.
A spokesperson for Edmonton Fire Rescue Services said crews were called to the home at 1400 Cherniak Way in the Cavanagh neighbourhood at 5:30 a.m. Firefighters arrived at the scene eight minutes later.
Both residences in the duplex sustained significant damage and some fire damage could also be seen on the residences next door to the duplex where the blaze broke out.
At one point, a Global News crew at the scene saw flames spread from the duplex that caught fire to the roof of a residence next door.
“(It looked) something like a hell,” said Mazen Mardini, who lives on the same street. “It was orange.
“It was horrible … I was really speechless.”
Mardini said he got up early to check on his baby. His wife then woke up too and they saw the fire burning and called 911.
“(Then) I just jumped to my neighbours’ house, banged on the door,” he said.
The EFRS said no injuries were reported but did not have further details.
