HALIFAX, NS – An expert says he believes a man suspected of walking into the unlocked homes of young women in Halifax to watch them sleep could be escalating his behaviour.

Elliott Leyton, a social anthropologist in Newfoundland and author of a book on serial killers called Hunting Humans, drew parallels to the notorious case of sex-killer Russell Williams in Ontario.

The man police are looking for in Halifax is dubbed the ‘Sleepwatcher.’

Halifax police believe they’re dealing with one person and have released four artist sketches of a man who has confounded them since 2008.

The suspect has roughly 20 cases linked to him.

He enters a young woman’s room and stands over her before leaving soon after she awakes.

But in one of the most recent incidents, police say the culprit sexually touched two young women.

Constable Brian Palmeter of Halifax police says the first case of touching appeared to be an attempt to wake up the woman.

But he says it’s a concern for police that the behaviour has the ability to escalate.
