MONTREAL – Relatives of the 118 people who perished in the crash of a Trans-Canada Air Lines flight 50 years ago will visit the site of the tragedy today.

It’s been described as one of Canada’s worst air disasters.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

On November 29th, 1963, Flight 831 caught fire and then exploded shortly after takeoff from Montreal’s Dorval Airport.

The plane crashed in a field in the community of Ste-Therese-de-Blainville.

About 350 relatives of the victims came together on Friday to mark the 50th anniversary with a memorial service.

Today, they will visit the crash site or visit a local museum where there’s an exhibit on the crash.

A Transport Canada investigation couldn’t determine an exact cause because the DC-8 jet had disintegrated.
