The immigrant steamship SS Atlantic of the White Star Line, en route to Halifax, ran aground near Lower Prospect, Nova Scotia on April 1, 1873. Of the approximately 975 aboard, some 550 perished in the worst single-vessel marine disaster to occur off the Canadian coast prior to the sinking of the Titanic. Thanks to the efforts of fishermen from Lower Prospect, Upper Prospect and Terence Bay, more than 400 were saved.

That tragedy is being marked 150 years later by local residents.

March 31

The SS Atlantic Heritage Park Society will be co-hosting a Service of Commemoration with The Anglican Parish of St. Timothy’s, Hatchet Lake and St Paul’s, Terence Bay. All are welcome to participate in the service at St Paul’s in Terence Bay on March 31 at 7:30pm.

April 1

On April 1, from 2-6pm, community members and descendants of rescuers will come together at the White’s Lake Legion to remember those who died in the wreck and to honour the courage of the rescuers and local families who opened their homes to the victims. Local musicians and well-known author Bob Chaulk will lead the event which will end with a ham and scalloped potato supper.
