DANCERS’ STUDIO WEST: Made Up

Dancers’ Studio West has been one of most influential artistic instigators on the Alberta dance scene since 1980. Over the years we’ve facilitated over 474 new short choreographies by over 312 independent artists. As a presenter, we’ve brought the likes of La La La Human Steps, Crystal Pite and Toronto Dance Theatre through our theatre doors. As an incubator, we continue to provide conditions in which artists may research, reflect and innovate.  Please join us for the world premiere of Associate Artist Linnea Swan’s Made Up, a dance film installation – Projecting images of the female body through multiple layers of tulle, a fabric traditionally associated with the wedding gown and a dancer’s tutu, choreographer/filmmaker Linnea Swan’s Made Up examines the hyperbolic feminine to question the binary construct of the male/female gaze. Working significantly with tight framing and close ups, Swan draws the viewer to follow her own gaze, one which is complicated by the historical impact of female subjectivity in narrative art forms.
