The Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at the University of British Columbia presents acclaimed Inuit throat-singing duo PIQSIQ in a digital production filmed at the Chan Centre, available online from October 16, 2020. PIQSIQ’s aesthetic is deeply impacted by their relationship to the environment. Their “wonderfully rhythmic and atmospheric” (Vancouver Sun) sound is an ethereal, mesmerizing blend of traditional vocal technique, improvisation and new technology. Performing both ancient songs and new compositions, the sisters and vocalists see their art as a political act of cultural revitalization; a dynamic, modern expression born out of an ancient practice, the result of which is “riveting… truly haunting” (The Vancouver Sun).
