The Green Growing Initiatives Program incorporates Tower Gardens, Little Green Thumb Gardens and outdoor school gardens within the Parkland County School Division. A Classroom Garden provides a platform for varied food related educational content, ranging from agriculture and ecology, to food justice, nutrition, cultural and community connections. The skills of critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity are needed to thrive in an evolving society and workplace. This program focuses on food literacy. It is proven that positive food experiences and education in youth have lasting effects into adulthood. Currently, we are preparing for the 3rd Annual Kids Can Cook Celebration. Last year, the 2nd Annual Kids Can Cook Celebration was a huge success with well over 300 guests, 85 student chefs and 13 Chef Mentors in attendance! This success is due in large part to wonderful Chef Mentors, who went above and beyond for our students! Local Chef Mentors are paired with a team of 4 – 6 students, from a Parkland Division School, to create a dish that will serve 30 people. The recipe will emphasize healthy and nutritious eating and will include a minimum of 2 ingredients grown in their own classroom garden. This event is a celebration of the seed to table journey in our classrooms. A fully catered dinner is accompanied by the team’s culinary creations. We would sincerely appreciate your assistance in promoting the event. Tickets can be purchased via EventBrite by searching Kids Can Cook Celebration.
