Orchestra Borealis Concert Nov. 3 @ 3pm - image

Orchestra Borealis David Hoyt, conductor / artistic director Sunday, November 3 at 3:00 PM – South Pointe Community Centre, 11520 Ellerslie Rd SW, Edmonton AB T6W 1A2 Orchestra Borealis is pleased to share our final concert of the 2019/20season with you. Our concert will begin with Weber’s Overture to Der Freischutz. The Overture is from the celebrated German opera that tells of a hunter who bargains with the devil to acquire a supply of bullets that can be guided to their target by the marksman’s will. The overture is a study in contrasts between natural and supernatural, light and dark, slow and fast, major and minor. Snowdrift, by Canadian composer John Burge, is a 14-minute tone poem that simply uses the white notes of the piano to capture swirling and overlapping effects created by snow and wind. If you have survived a few Canadian winters, these will not be hard to relate to. The work has a strong romantic element and is definitely written by someone who would rather embrace winter than fight it. The final selection of the first half will be the Vivaldi Concerto for 2 Trumpets in C major, RV 537. This piece showcases the solo trumpets with a flashy and fanfare-like feel propelled by accompanying strings. The second half of the concert features Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8 in G Minor Op. 88. This symphony was written in the summer of 1889. Dvořák transcended structure to create a wholly fresh view of a symphonic work. The symphony is in the proper four movements but moves between minor and major themes that intertwine throughout the piece.
