It’s All In the Family for MATILDA the MUSICAL When Matilda the Musical opens at the Grand Theatre on September 13th, Lilli McDonald and her mom and dad will be on stage as the dysfunctional Wormwood family.
Rae and Bryan McDonald play the over-the-top Wormwood parents to (real-life daughter) Lilli’s Matilda.
The Wormwood family is rounded out by Simon Rooney as son/brother Michael Wormwood.
The McDonald’s are not the only family on stage in Bottle Tree Productions’ show.
Husband and wife, Lynn Kerr and Anthony Kaduck, bring experience and finesse to the stage – although you may not recognize Anthony, who is playing the tyrannical headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull.
Lynn’s Mrs. Phelps, the librarian, encourages Matilda’s imagination, giving her an appreciative audience for her stories.
Emily Overvelde, a stage veteran at twelve years old, is joined by her mother, Deleen, who will be making her debut in this show.
The family fun spans generations as Cindy Chappell’s first grandchild, Nora, plays Baby Matilda at the top of the show.
Director Anne Marie Mortensen talks about supporting families in theatre, “Theatre rehearsals are relatively short, intense processes. The actors spend a lot of time away from their families to get a show ready, so if I have families wanting to play together, I am happy to support that. Because of Bottle Tree’s educational arm, I have a lot of talented young people who come and audition – and they bring their parents into it. Cindy is the exception this time – bringing baby Nora to play her first role. I love the family environment that we create – and it’s not just on stage.
The families are exceptionally supportive behind the scenes with building, painting, providing snacks.. you name it – those families are behind us every step of the way.
We could not do this without them.
