Martensville Veterinary Hospital wants to help reunite more lost pets and owners through it’s annual Microchip Day Event.  Having a microchip greatly increases the likelihood of the animal being reunited with their owner, in the event it goes missing.

Microchips will be implanted for only $20.00 each with all proceeds from the event being donated to the Saskatoon City Police K9 Unit for purchase of advanced veterinary first aid kits.  “Having these first aid kits ready to use out in the field will be great.  Our K9 units face all sorts of dangerous situations and these kits could be truly lifesaving for them.” explains Sgt. Eddie Panamaroff, Saskatoon Police Service Canine Unit.

A microchip is a small chip, about the size of a grain of rice, that is implanted under the pet’s skin as permanent identification.  When a lost pet is found, animal shelters and veterinary clinics can scan the pet with a specific type of scanner (using radio frequency identification technology), which will bring up a unique number that is matched in a database to an owner’s contact information.  While collars and tags are always recommended, collars can become lost or aren’t always on when an animal escapes the home, which is why microchips are an important additional tool in helping lost pets return home.  Martensville Veterinary Hospital also wants to remind pet owners that a microchip only works if its registration information is accurate.  “Keeping your contact information up to date is key so you can actually be contacted if your pet is ever found,” adds Stewart.  “If you’re not sure if your pet has a microchip or if your information is correct, you’re also welcome to join us so we can help answer those questions for you,” Stewart says.

Those interested in bringing their pet to the event are encouraged to call and reserve an appointment by phoning 306-933-2677 or by emailing mvh@myvethosp.ca.  Drop-in spots are also available.  Other festivities are planned throughout the day and include a pet photo station, raffle prizes, as well as snacks for both the humans and the pets.

Martensville Veterinary Hospital is a small animal focused, multi-veterinarian, AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) accredited and Cat-Friendly practice that has been serving the Martensville and surrounding communities for over 25 years.
