A full-sized replica of Christianity’s most famous relic is expected to attract thousands of Lenten pilgrims when St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Calgary hosts the Man of the Shroud Exhibit March 23 to April 10, 2018. Organized by a group of clergy and laity in Vancouver, B.C. and coordinated with the professional assistance of the White Rock Museum, the public exhibit features a photographic reproduction of the Turin Shroud. The shroud, a 4.3 m (14-foot) linen cloth preserved in northern Italy, bears the image of a man scourged and crucified. Since medieval times, the cloth has been venerated as the cloth that wrapped Jesus’ crucified body. The exhibit at St. Peter’s includes professionally-prepared documentary museum boards and a collection of recreated artifacts of Christ’s Passion. “Catholics, and many other Christians, recognize how physical artifacts can help us receive and respond to God’s grace. Our parish is excited about this opportunity to give people in our community a special way to deepen their relationship with Christ leading up to and for the week after Easter,” says Fr. Jerome Lavigne, pastor, St. Peter’s. The Man of the Shroud Exhibit includes keynote presentations by globally-renowned shroud scholars, Fr. Andrew Dalton LC and Barrie Schwortz. Mr. Schwortz was the official documenting photographer for the 1978 Shroud of Turn Research Project. He has been published in Time, Life, & National Geographic Magazines and his images have been seen on CNN and other major American networks. . Fr. Andrew Dalton has given hundreds of tours to groups all over the world, speaking on the physical sufferings of Jesus and the Shroud of Turin – he will be in Calgary from March 28 – April 4 and Mr. Schwortz from April 6-10. Admission is by freewill donation.
