Women’s Summer Fair Returns to the Downtown Eastside! Vancouver, B.C. – The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre (DEWC) is proud to present the Women’s Summer Fair & Flea Market, returning to the neighbourhood for its second year in partnership with the City of Vancouver. Beginning on June 10, the summer fair will provide safe income opportunities for women in the Downtown Eastside (DTES), and host more than twenty-five vendors and artisans from within the community. Each Saturday throughout the duration of the market, there will be lively entertainment from local performers, an area for children to play, information booths about the different resources available in the community, and a wide variety of goods and services for purchase. Last year’s fair generated a huge positive response from women of the community, who sold everything from arts and crafts to clothing, jewelry, housewares, snacks, and bannock. This year, the fair aims to build on its past successes: providing a secure vending space for women engaged in the survival economy, empowering women through skills building, and celebrating the vibrancy and resilience of women in the DTES. Additionally, the fair collaborates with the City’s Green Goals by reselling and repurposing excess donations to reduce waste and encourage sustainable consumption. About the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre – The Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre operates a low-barrier drop-in centre and emergency shelter that provide safe women-only space, hot meals, basic needs and support services to up to 500 women daily. By connecting women of the Downtown Eastside to a continuum of care, DEWC works towards their empowerment and long term positive change on personal, collective, and societal levels.
