EJFS presents Spring Spectacular with Emilie-Claire BarlowThe Edmonton Jazz Festival Society is set to host its annual benefit event, Spring Spectacular, an evening of unforgettable jazz featuring Juno-award winning singer Emilie-Claire Barlow and the Edmonton Jazz Orchestra. Tickets for Performance only are $40 + service fees, Tickets for Dinner are $135 + service fees. The Spring Spectacular will provide guests with the option of attending solely as a concert-goer or, to add a dinner component to their evening, enjoy a three-course meal before the show. The event offers many elements for patrons including both live and silent auctions. All proceeds of this event will be used in support the EJFS outreach initiatives, including: Jazzworks Workshops, Jazz In Schools, Edmonton Jazz Orchestra, and the Edmonton Jazz Collective. Ragtime & Riffs – Festival City Winds Intermediate BandsBoth Festival City Winds Intermediate Bands, under the direction of Artistic Director Wendy J. Grasdahl, play some Ragtime & Riffs on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 7:30PM in the Robert Tegler Centre, Concordia University of Edmonton (7128 Ada Boulevard – 73 St. south of 112 Ave.). The bands are also pleased to welcome the Stephen Stone Percussion Trio as their special guests for the evening. From ragtime and folksongs to slightly more modern rock riffs, there is sure to be something to transport the audience back to an earlier time. The Intermediate Two Band will explore the swing music of a Chicago gangster’s private night club (David Weirich’s Diamond Joe’s Riviera Club), folksongs, Debussy’s Golliwogg’s Cakewalk, the theme from the movie The Great Escape, and a fast-paced musical ride in William Owens’ Cruisin’. The Intermediate One Band will explore Scott Joplin’s music from the movie The Sting, Brian Balmages’ That Old Hound Dog Rag (inspired by his two lively and zany dogs, Toby and Angel), and an arrangement of The Beatles’ classic song When I’m Sixty-Four. The Stephen Stone Percussion Trio will dazzle the audience with three people playing the marimba at the same time, and many other awe-inspiring performances. Tales from the Black Woods Part 2 – A Clarinet Studio RecitalThe clarinet students from the University of Alberta will be performing their fourth annual clarinet studio showcase. This group, under the study of Don Ross and Julianne Scott, contains members from the Ceremonial Guard, Edmonton Youth Orchestra, and various university music ensembles. The recital features a variety of clarinet pieces by Schmitt, Weber, Lowry, and many more. Come see Adriana Jankovic, Claire Neilson, Elizabeth Smith, Linnea Signore, Nadya Ajani, Meijun Chen, Bailey Hansen, Kassandra Tchir, Marina Powers and Jacob Eisenstat perform an evening of diverse clarinet music. The Shean Strings CompetitionOn Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20, 2017, six string players from across Canada will take to the stage of Muttart Hall at the Alberta College Campus of MacEwan University (10050 MacDonald Drive, Edmonton) as they vie for the $8,000 top prize in The Shean Strings Competition and the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a later date. The competition will see the competitors perform their String Recital Programs on Friday, May 19 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:30 – 9:30 PM, and perform their String Concertos on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM and 6:30 – 8:30 PM. The adjudications and awards will follow the concertos on Saturday at approximately 9:00 PM, and a reception will follow the awards. This year’s competitors (with hometowns in parentheses) are: Shang Ko (Sunny) Chan, violin (Surrey, BC); Gabrielle Després, violin (Edmonton, AB); Sean Gao, violin (Burnaby, BC); Alice Lee, violin (Toronto, ON); Grace Sohn, violoncello (Coquitlam, BC), and Grace Takeda, viola (North Vancouver, BC). The adjudicators for this year’s competition are: David Hoyt, Chair; Norman Adams, violoncello; and Edmonton-born Jessica Linnebach, violin.
