This week’s Gardening Tip: Top-Dressing Your Lawn

A lush lawn needs healthy soil and top-dressing or adding a thin layer of rich soil or compost over your lawn and acts as a natural fertilizer to improve your lawn’s overall health. Top-Dressing improves lawns as organic matter breaks down and filters through existing soil to improve texture and overall health. This also helps to improve drainage and water holding capacity and even out the terrain.

Add a light layer of compost or blended soil in Spring and Fall. Shovel out small sections (2-3 shovelfuls) onto your lawn at spaced intervals. Spread the top-dressing mix ½” or less over the existing grass using the back side of a heavy garden rake, working it into aeration holes and covering low spots.
