Queen of Nanaimo to be out of service longer than expected following accident

A B.C ferry that was damaged when high winds pushed it off course near Mayne Island this weekend is still out of service, and additional sailings have been commissioned for the Southern Gulf Islands route for Remembrance Day long weekend.

The Queen of Nanaimo has been towed to North Vancouver and is now in dry dock, and is anticipated to remain out of service until the end of next week. 

Service to all Southern Gulf Island destinations is being provided through Swartz Bay.

Customers are advised to use the following routes: 

Throughfare Southern Gulf Islands via Swartz Bay Terminal

  • Customers travelling from Tsawwassen will be provided a free reservation on the sailing of their choice to Swartz Baywhen requesting throughfare travel to the Southern Gulf Islands, subject to availability.
  • Customers travelling from the Southern Gulf Islands will be provided a free reservation on the sailing of their choice from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen when requesting throughfare travel, subject to availability.
  • Please contact the Customer Service Centre between 7:00 am and 8:00 pm, Monday to Friday and 8:00 am to 6:00 pm on weekends at 1-888-BCFERRY (1-888-223-3779) to book your reservation.
  • Customers travelling from Tsawwassen to the Southern Gulf Islands on a throughfare will be provided with a Southern Gulf Island destination card at the ticket booth to assist with identifying their vehicle.
  • Swartz Bay terminal maps will be provided to throughfare customers departing from Tsawwassen to assist with directions to re-enter the Swartz Bay terminal at the ticket booths. The map can also be accessed on-line:http://www.bcferries.com/files/PDFs/BCF_thrufare_handout_Nov13_blk_vA_print.pdf
  • Employees will be available at both the Fulford Terminal and Long Harbour Terminal to assist during the service interruption period.

Inter-Gulf Island travel:

  • Customers requiring Inter-Gulf Island travel can travel via Swartz Bay and will have access to the discounted rate when paying with an Experience Card. Please obtain a through-fare voucher at your departure terminal or onboard theSkeena Queen to present to the ticket agent at Swartz Bay.

Meanwhile, all scheduled sailings between Tsawwassen and the Southern Gulf Islands are cancelled until further notice.

The following additional sailings will be offered on the Swartz Bay – Southern Gulf Island as well as the Swartz Bay – Tsawwassen routes for the Remembrance Day long weekend:

Friday, November 8

• The MV Mayne Queen will make an additional sailing from Swartz Bay at 12:45 pm bound for Pender Island and MayneIsland. This ship will return to Swartz Bay at 3:00 pm
• The MV Skeena Queen will make an additional sailing from Fulford Harbour terminal on Salt Spring Island to Swartz Bay at 9:50 pm and from Swartz Bay to Salt Spring Island at 11:00 pm.
• The Queen of Cumberland 8:00 pm sailing from Swartz Bay will make an additional stop at Galiano Island, arriving at Sturdies Bay at 9:35 pm.
• The Spirit of Vancouver Island will make additional sailings from Swartz Bay at 8:00 am and from Tsawwassen at 10:00 am to assist with transfers between the Southern Gulf Islands and Tsawwassen through Swartz Bay.

Saturday, November 9

• The MV Mayne Queen will make an additional sailing from Swartz Bay at 1:30 pm bound for Pender Island and MayneIsland. This ship will return to Swartz Bay at 3:40 pm.
• The Spirit of Vancouver Island will make additional sailings from Swartz Bay at 8:00 am and from Tsawwassen at 10:00 am to assist with transfers between the Southern Gulf Islands and Tsawwassen through Swartz Bay.

Monday, November 11

• The MV Mayne Queen will make an additional sailing from Swartz Bay at 12:35 pm bound for Pender Island. This ship will return to Swartz Bay at 2:15 pm.
• The Coastal Renaissance will make additional sailings from Swartz Bay at 2:00 pm and 6:00 pm and from Tsawwassen at 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm to assist with transfer traffic between the Southern Gulf Islands and Tsawwassen through SwartzBay.
