MONTREAL – The leader of Projet Montreal, Richard Bergeron, announced on Wednesday that he intends to step down.
“This was my third election… and my last,” he told reporters at City Hall.
Bergeron said that after building Projet Montreal party from nothing to 28 councillors, he was proud of what they had accomplished, but someone else must lead party in next elections.
Bergeron confirmed that he will step down in 12 to 24 months and he will then leave political life.
He noted that the party would decide his successor.
The municipal elections in Montreal on Sunday marked Bergeron’s third unsuccessful attempt to become mayor.
He came in third place, behind mayoral candidate newcomer Mélanie Joly, with 25.52 per cent of the vote.
