Cygnus departs from space station

TORONTO – After three weeks at the International Space Station (ISS), Canadarm2 released the Cygnus commercial craft Tuesday morning.

Cygnus arrived at the ISS on Sept. 29 after encountering a navigation data “mismatch” that delayed the cargo by a week. After fixing the problem, NASA mission managers decided to postpone the docking until the new ISS crew, Expedition 37, launched from Kazakhstan and docked.

The spacecraft delivered 1,300 pounds of food and clothing and also included student experiments.

The hope is that Cygnus will be used to deliver critical science payloads to the ISS, the only laboratory in microgravity.

Cygnus will fire its engines at 1:41 p.m. and re-enter the Earth’s atmosphere before burning up over the Pacific Ocean.
