MONTREAL – Georges Laraque confirmed on Thursday that he will step aside as Green Party of Canada Deputy Leader and candidate in the Montreal riding of Bourassa.
Laraque said that he is resigning in order to focus on clearing his name of the fraud charges brought against him earlier in the week.

“It is a very difficult decision to make, but ultimately, I make this decision for the residents of Bourassa, so as not to distract from the many important issues to be addressed in this campaign,” Laraque noted in a statement.
“I will focus on proving my innocence before returning to any roles within the Green Party.”
Green Party leader Elizabeth May said on Thursday that she supports Laraque’s decision to step aside, but does not believe he is guilty of the charges.
“I am confident of Georges’ innocence,” she said in a statement.
“Once Georges is exonerated, I hope he will once again represent us as a candidate. In the meantime, I accept his resignation as Deputy Leader and as a candidate with tremendous regret.”
