RQHR dealing with overcapacity issues at both Regina hospitals

Hospitals in Regina and Saskatoon are at capacity and if it continues to go this way for the next while, possible patient transfers to rural hospitals could be expected. File / Global News

REGINA – Capacity issues at both Regina hospitals are forcing the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) to cancel some of their elective surgeries.

According to RQHR officials, Friday morning the Regina General Hospital was at 111% capacity while the Pasqua Hospital was at 114% capacity.

“We need to ensure our patients continue to receive safe, quality care,” said John Ash, RQHR Director of Patient Flow. “Postponing elective surgeries, and potentially procedures, will help us to focus on trauma and emergency room patients, and current inpatients, as we work to reduce capacity levels at both hospitals over the next two weeks. Our goal is to bring capacity levels to 100% or lower over the next two weeks.”

RQHR expects to postpone four elective surgeries scheduled for October 15th and affected patients will be notified by phone if their surgery has been cancelled. Patients unsure about whether or not their surgery is taking place are encouraged to contact their physician’s office directly.
