Senneville housing development hot button election issue

MONTREAL – A controversial housing project has become a hot button election campaign issue in the small town of Senneville, on the west island of Montreal.

Jane Guest is running against incumbent mayor George McLeish because she wants to stop the town council from passing its urban plan.

The development plan is calling for a new housing project of 60 to 70 single family homes and town houses to be built on 60 acres of green space, just off of Senneville Road.

Residents will get a chance to vote on the issue with two questions appearing on November 3 election ballots.

This will also be the day that the 600 registered voters are set to elect a new mayor.

Guest has been fighting the housing development project for more than two years.

The issue has compelled her to run for office to try and kill the plan.

Guest has argued that there is no need for the project and the development will not bring in any additional tax revenue to Senneville’s coffers.

But mayoral incumbent McLeish argued the new housing development is exactly what Senneville needs.

The mayor of 18 years noted that the town’s population has diminished in recent decades and new homes are needed to attract new families.

He insisted that the proposed housing project would protect green space and would be developed in a manner that reflects Senneville’s historic and residential charm.

The property is currently owned by Canada Lands.
