SASKATOON – An explosion has forced the shut down of a fertilizer plant east of Saskatoon.
Emergency services were called to the Richardson Pioneer plant around 11 a.m. after workers nearby heard the blast.
The company says a sulphur-based fertilizer product was being moved from one bin to another when the small explosion occurred causing significant damage to their equipment.

No one was injured.
“There was no resulting fire, there was no resulting release of any product into the atmosphere,” said Saskatoon Fire and Protective Services Battalion Chief Andy Kotelmach.
“Everybody is safe and right now the plant’s been shut down so there are no further sources of ignition for the product so it’s all been rendered safe,”
The site will remain closed while the company investigates the cause of the explosion.
