Court hears chilling 911 tape in case of Coquitlam double fatal hit-and-run

The man accused of hitting and killing two women and then driving away from the scene in Coquitlam in 2011 cried in court when the 911 tape was played.

Cory Sater is facing 10 charges, including two counts each of dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing death, and causing an accident resulting in death. The trial into the death of Lorraine Cruz and Charlene Reaveley got underway yesterday.

Cruz and her boyfriend had pulled over on the Lougheed Highway on February 19 after their vehicle had hit a median.

Charlene Reaveley and her husband Dan, along with friends, stopped to help them.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

As they stood there at the side of the road an alleged drunk driver hit Reaveley and Cruz and then took off.

The Crown alleges Sater was at a bar the day of the crash.

The 911 call was entered into evidence on Monday. The call was made by Reaveley’s friend Kimberley Moore. This call was after Cruz crashed into the median, and therefore captures the moment both women were hit and killed.

Moore can be heard saying ‘my girlfriend just got run over.’

Later she says “All three of them were hit by a car and he took off. Oh my god he took off.”

There were many tears in the courtroom during the call as family members relived the tragic event.

“It’s going to be a difficult couple of weeks, and all we can hope for is the best and that people learn from this at the same time,” said Lisa Reaveley, Charlene’s sister-in-law. “It was very emotional, just reliving the situation and hearing some of the information that kind of stuff, brings back raw emotion.”

The trial continues today.
