SASKATOON – With over 133,000 online votes, the Richardson Pioneer Rider Nation community celebration has decided the three winning communities in Saskatchewan to split $100,000.
Communities in the province were challenged to show their passion for local health and wellness initiatives as well as their spirit for the 101st Grey Cup Festival which being held Nov. 20-24, 2013.
“The response from the province and all the communities who participated in the celebration has been tremendous,” said Tom Hamilton, Vice President, Richardson Pioneer.
Twenty-nine submissions were narrowed down to the top eight with people voting online until Wednesday.
Dalmeny won the top prize of $50,000 which will be put towards a playground, soccer pitch and picnic area.
Their proposal was made by the Dalmeny spray and play intergenerational park project committee for a new playground and spray park dedicated to Cpl. Shane Keating.
Keating grew up in Dalmeny and was killed in 2006 while serving overseas in Afghanistan.
Moosomin and Davidson will also receive $25,000 each towards their own health and wellness initiatives.
In addition to the cash prize, each community will host a free celebration during an upcoming Saskatchewan Roughriders away game.
The 2013 Grey Cup is on Nov. 24 at Mosaic Stadium.
