Watch: Developers eye Delta farmland

Residents in Delta are growing increasingly concerned growing development in the area will lead to farmland being permanently lost.

With more and more land being taking out of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR), there are concerns about the future of the industry.

The ALR was developed about 40 years ago to protect farmland from development.

It’s being examined as part of the province’s core review, but it’s unclear if that will change anything.

Hundreds of acres have already been removed from the ALR as part of the treaty with the Tsawassen First Nation. The land is being developed into a shopping centre, business park and homes.

There is also the ongoing expansion of the port and concerns that decisions made by the port authority and the provincial government can overrule the Agricultural Land Commission.
