Winnipeg bug battler bolts; city seeks replacement

WINNIPEG – When it comes to the city’s bug battle, Taz Stuart led the fight — but not anymore.

“I think it is a huge loss for the city of Winnipeg,” said Fort Rouge Coun. Jenny Gerbasi.

A representative from the City of Winnipeg confirmed Stuart is no longer a city employee but would not say when or why he left.

“The City does not discuss matters relating to human resources,” Steve West said in an email to Global News.

“I think when it first came to light I was a bit surprised,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “We’re not involved in those types of decisions.”

The last time Stuart was seen in a public appearance was at a press conference in July.

City officials won’t comment on reports Stuart was suspended last month.

“We were in constant contact on what the trap counts were and what he was doing about it,” said Charleswood Coun. Paula Havixbeck. “Probably for the last few weeks it’s been somebody else and a different person each time.”

Stuart has been the city’s chief entomologist since 2004. Officials say a search for a replacement will start soon.

In the meantime, another entomologist from the Insect Control Branch will fill Stuart’s position.

“If we can’t have Taz Stuart, we are going to have to find another highly qualified entomologist,” said Gerbasi. “I don’t know how common they are but I hope we can find someone as good as him.”
