What you need to know about the West Nile Virus

MONTREAL – Summer might be coming to an end pretty soon but there is still is plenty of time for mosquitoes to keep feasting on our innocent flesh.

The West Nile Virus is a virus that appeared in Quebec in 2002.

It is transferred from birds to mosquitoes, and from mosquitoes to human skin.

Emergency Room doctor Mitch Shulman joined the Morning News to share some useful information on the disease.

“Don’t panic,” said Dr.Shulman “Only 20% of people will have the West Nile Fever”

The West Nile Fever is a virus that is comparable to a regular flu.

It will last 3-6 days and will have generally all the same symptoms as a summer flu.

It is essential to protect your skin from mosquitoes during summer. File / Global News

Shulman encourages people who show the following symptoms to visit the closest hospital for precautionary reasons:

  • High fever
  • Severe confusion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Drowsiness
  • Seizures
  • Stiff Neck

Though there is no real remedy to get rid of mosquitoes, little things like wearing long clothes that are lighter colors and using DEET spray on your clothing.
