MONTREAL – Motorists heading to a country cottage in the Eastern Townships or to New England for a weekend gateway are in for a nasty surprise.
A massive road work construction site on A-10 has been abandoned with no sign of work starting again any time soon.
Civ-Bec has packed up all its equipment and there are no workers anywhere in sight.
It was awarded an $11.5 Million dollar project to build two new overpasses and a bridge on the stretch of highway between A-30 and A-35.
Orange cones, signs and cement barriers greet drivers as they are forced to navigate around the work site.
Transport Quebec has sent a lawyer’s letter to the company demanding it return to work by Thursday.
If not, another company will be awarded the contract and the bill will be sent to CIv-Bec.
Global News visited the head office of the company in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu and discovered the entrance doors are locked.
No one answered the doors and no one from the company returned our calls. Civ-Bec’s website is also down.
The company could be facing financial hardship.
It faces 264 charges relating to financial fraud with Revenue-Quebec. The charges were laid last January.
But none of comes as any sort of compensation for the drivers who have to whiz by the construction on a daily basis and be reminded of the work stoppage.
